Red Wing
This historic river town was built near the village of the Dakota band led by Chief Red Wing. Because of local clay sources, pottery and pipe manufacturing became important industries. The Red Wing Pottery factory has been transformed into shops, restaurants and offices. And the historic St. James Hotel is a visitor favorite for charming overnight accommodations. Nearby is Old Frontenac, filled with historic homes from its days as a fashionable summer resort community in the 1870s. Visitors can cross the Mississippi River into Maiden Rock, Wisconsin from Red Wing.
