St. Paul
Minnesota's capital city, Saint Paul, developed as the end point of steamboat navigation up the Mississippi River. Its population grew rapidly and it was soon established as the state's center of government and commerce. Nearby Fort Snelling interpretive site offers insight into the early settlement of the area, while a trip down Saint Paul's historic summit avenue gives way to the homes of some of the area's early commercial giants. The downtown riverfront revival includes parks, walkways, entertainment facilities and the lively Harriet Island Park.
