Upper St. Anthony Falls — Minneapolis
The Mississippi River forms the third largest drainage basin in the world. Its 29 lock-and-dam system between Minneapolis, Minn. and Granite City, Ill., controls nearly two-thirds of the nation's watershed. The river drops nearly 420 feet along this 669-mile route. The dream of traveling north of St. Anthony Falls on the Mississippi River was made possible when Congress approved the Upper Minneapolis Harbor Development Project in 1937. This project included the construction of the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam that was completed in 1963. Tours are available.
